National Foster Care Month
With May being National Foster Care Month, Families First of Florida recognizes the importance of every child being raised in a family setting. All children have the right to feeling safe, contributing to and belonging in a family structure.
Families First of Florida knows how supporting each other as we raise children from the foster care system is a must. The National Foster Parent Association is a great organization that provides information and people who have taken the step in becoming a foster parent.
According to the Florida Department of Children and Families as of January 2018 24,390 children are in out-of-home placement. 13,669 of these children are placed with relatives or non-relative families. Which means ,they are living in a family setting with people they already have established relationship with. Of those 24,390 there are 7,792 of these children in foster care. Another 2,141 of these children are in a group setting, 1,173 are in an other setting and 165 are in residential treatment. Which means 3,479 children are left without having a family structure ,a family they can relate to for support and a sense of home. These children are placed in institutions with rotating adults. The need for foster parents are great in this state, not just for the short term, but for the long term, these children deserve an opportunity to become productive adults.
